COURSE CURRICULUM
The Public Policy programme offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum designed to develop advanced knowledge of public administration, governance, policy analysis and research methods. Contemporary Issues in Public Administration, Politics and Policy enables students to explore major challenges facing public administration and policy at local, national and international levels while undertaking an independent research project on a contemporary issue of their choice. Students design their own area of study, determine appropriate methodologies and assessment structures, and complete a learning contract and reflective learning log that strengthen research skills, self-management and professional development. The Dissertation module allows students to apply their knowledge, communication abilities and research expertise to a specialist topic relevant to public policy through a substantial 15,000-word project. Students may choose a traditional dissertation format or alternative knowledge exchange outputs such as systematic reviews, policy recommendations or research reports prepared for public organisations and stakeholders. International Law, Politics and Society develops a comprehensive understanding of the legal principles, institutions and political structures that shape international governance and global society. Students explore the interconnected nature of the modern world by examining international relations, international law, global institutions and the role of the state while critically evaluating their effectiveness in maintaining international order and cooperation. Introduction to Public Administration and Policy introduces the theories, principles and practices that underpin public sector management and policy development. Students investigate major policy debates and explore the implementation, evaluation and impact of public policies through historical and contemporary case studies in areas such as local government, healthcare, welfare and crime. Social Research Methods provides advanced knowledge of research design, methodology and data analysis while examining the philosophical foundations of social science research and the relationship between theory, evidence and practice. Students also develop an understanding of ethical and practical issues involved in conducting high-quality research. Together, these modules equip graduates with strong analytical, leadership, communication and research skills that prepare them for careers in government, public administration, policy analysis, international organisations and the voluntary and community sectors.
