COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Photography with Advanced Practice programme provides an advanced and professionally focused learning experience that develops students as creative, technically skilled, and research-informed photographic practitioners. The Approaches and Images module encourages students to explore aesthetic, technical, and conceptual methods of image-making while planning, developing, and completing photographic projects that challenge previous ideas and encourage experimentation with innovative techniques and creative approaches. Audience and Encounters develops an understanding of how photographs are experienced, shared, and interpreted within different social, cultural, and material contexts, helping students create photographic work specifically designed for particular audiences and platforms. The Master's Project: Photography offers students the opportunity to undertake an extensive independent investigation aligned with their personal interests and professional ambitions, resulting in a significant body of work suitable for commercial, industrial, creative, or research-based fields. Through this project, students take responsibility for conceptualisation, research, development, and final presentation, demonstrating their artistic vision and technical expertise. The Connected Practitioner module strengthens creative research abilities and interdisciplinary collaboration through engagement with contemporary issues, research methodologies, and debates within the arts and creative industries, supported by lectures, seminars, and practical discussions. The Resourceful Photographer module focuses on the professional and entrepreneurial aspects of photographic practice, developing skills in communication, marketing, promotion, legal and ethical responsibilities, business models, and career management, ensuring students are prepared for the realities of professional practice. The Advanced Practice module further enhances employability by providing opportunities to apply existing knowledge and experience to real-world business challenges while developing reflective practice, critical thinking, and professional problem-solving skills. Together, these modules equip graduates with advanced technical knowledge, creative confidence, professional awareness, and research expertise, preparing them for successful careers as photographers, visual artists, educators, curators, commercial practitioners, entrepreneurs, and interdisciplinary creative professionals within the global creative industries.
