COURSE CURRICULUM

The Filmmaking master's programme combines advanced creative practice, technical expertise and professional development to prepare students for careers across the screen and digital media industries. The Advanced Sound and Vision module introduces the collaborative nature of filmmaking, allowing students to work in teams to create compelling moving image projects using cinematography, sound, editing and production design techniques. Through workshops in directing, producing, camera operation, lighting, sound recording and sound design across documentary and fiction filmmaking, students develop confidence in creative decision-making and learn to manage projects within contemporary digital production environments. The Production module guides students through the entire filmmaking process, from the initial concept stage through pre-production and production to the completion of a professional-standard short film. Students gain practical experience in scheduling, budgeting, production management, casting and directing actors while developing strategies to overcome technical and creative challenges. Project Research and Development encourages students to critically engage with filmmaking theory and contemporary practices while generating innovative ideas and original concepts for moving image projects. This module supports experimentation and helps students establish a distinctive creative voice and professional identity. The Connected Practitioner module develops research skills, critical thinking and professional awareness through engagement with current debates, policies and practices within the arts and creative industries. Students participate in seminars, discussions and collaborative learning activities that broaden perspectives and strengthen interdisciplinary understanding. The Masters Project provides an opportunity to undertake a substantial independent project tailored to individual career aspirations, resulting in original films, exhibitions, publications or digital works that demonstrate creativity, technical ability and professional competence. The Advanced Practice module further enhances employability by enabling students to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges, develop practical solutions to business problems and strengthen their personal and professional skills through reflection, critical thinking and experiential learning opportunities aligned with their future career ambitions.
