COURSE CURRICULUM

This master's programme offers a comprehensive study of comics, visual storytelling, and professional creative practice through a range of carefully designed modules that combine artistic development, industry knowledge, and independent research. The Adaption and Interpretation for Comics module introduces students to the process of transforming stories, ideas, and concepts from different sources into engaging comic narratives, developing skills in visual communication, narrative structure, character development, and creative interpretation. Developing a Personal Voice in Comics encourages students to explore and refine their own artistic identity, helping them establish a distinctive style and approach to storytelling through experimentation, critical reflection, and practical project work. Engaging with the Comics Industry provides valuable insight into the professional world of comics and illustration, covering topics such as publishing, freelance practice, contracts, intellectual property, networking, marketing, and entrepreneurship, preparing students for careers within the creative industries. The Connected Practitioner module promotes collaboration, reflective learning, and interdisciplinary working, enabling students to understand how visual storytelling can contribute to wider social, educational, cultural, and professional contexts while strengthening communication and teamwork skills. Students also undertake an Advanced Practice module that allows them to apply and develop their knowledge and creative abilities through more specialised and professional work, helping them prepare for industry expectations and future career opportunities. The programme concludes with a Masters Project, where students independently create a substantial body of original work that demonstrates their creative, technical, and research capabilities while showcasing their professional development and artistic vision. Together, these modules equip graduates with the expertise, confidence, and industry awareness required for successful careers as comic artists, illustrators, graphic novelists, storyboard artists, concept artists, writers, educators, and creative professionals in the global creative sector.
