COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Photography programme provides an advanced and research-informed curriculum designed to develop students as creative, technically skilled, and professionally aware photographic practitioners. The Approaches and Images module encourages students to explore aesthetic, technical, and conceptual approaches to image-making while planning, developing, and completing photographic projects that challenge existing ideas and encourage experimentation with new creative methods. Through reflection and innovation, students refine their artistic identity and expand the boundaries of their practice. Audience and Encounters focuses on the relationship between photographs and their audiences, helping students understand how images function within different material, cultural, and professional contexts. Students investigate how photographs are presented, shared, and experienced across various formats and platforms while producing photographic work tailored to specific audiences and purposes. The Master's Project: Photography provides an opportunity for an extensive individual investigation aligned with personal interests and career ambitions, allowing students to undertake research and create significant professional outputs suitable for commercial, creative, industrial, or academic contexts. Students take full responsibility for the project's concept, development, and final presentation, demonstrating their expertise and creative vision. The Connected Practitioner module strengthens creative research skills and interdisciplinary collaboration by encouraging engagement with current debates, research methods, and issues affecting the arts and creative industries. Through lectures, seminars, and collaborative discussions, students develop critical thinking and research abilities that support both creative and academic practice. The Resourceful Photographer module focuses on the professional and entrepreneurial skills required for a successful career in photography, covering areas such as communication, marketing, promotion, legal and ethical responsibilities, business models, and career development. Together, these modules equip graduates with advanced photographic knowledge, professional awareness, technical expertise, and creative confidence, preparing them for careers as photographers, visual artists, commercial practitioners, curators, educators, and entrepreneurs within the global creative industries.
