COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA History programme at Teesside University offers advanced training in historical research and critical analysis, enabling students to develop specialist knowledge in areas aligned with their interests and the expertise of the teaching team. The course culminates in a Final Project, where students undertake a substantial piece of original historical research through a 15,000-word dissertation or an equivalent knowledge exchange project such as an exhibition, educational resource, website or public engagement activity. The History Beyond the Academy module explores theoretical and practical approaches to history while developing historiographical and interpretive skills that allow students to engage with contemporary historical debates, narratives and methodologies. Through the History in Focus module, students select one of two specialist pathways linked to the research expertise of academic staff, allowing in-depth exploration of a particular historical field while designing their own research questions and participating in seminar discussions. The Negotiated Learning Project provides a high degree of flexibility, enabling students to work independently with academic supervision to investigate a chosen topic in greater depth and develop expertise in a specific area of historical interest. The Sources and Skills module strengthens research capabilities through practical training in developing research questions, applying historical methodologies, analysing primary sources, presenting research findings and applying for research funding. Students also complete knowledge exchange activities that improve communication and public engagement skills. The programme develops advanced abilities in research, critical thinking, analysis and communication, preparing graduates for careers in education, museums, archives, heritage organisations, publishing, public history, government services and cultural institutions, while also providing an excellent foundation for doctoral study and academic research careers.
