COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Art programme offers an advanced and research-led curriculum designed to develop students as independent artists, creative thinkers, and future leaders within the contemporary art world. The Art and Studio Development module encourages students to explore how artists create and position their work within contemporary artistic practice while experimenting with creative research methods and considering the social, environmental, and material impact of their work. Through studio practice, reflective writing, and self-directed projects, students develop advanced practical skills and a distinctive artistic voice. The Enquiry and Process module challenges students to expand their creative boundaries while strengthening critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and independent research abilities through engagement with contemporary art theory and themes. Regular peer reviews, group critiques, and feedback from tutors, visiting artists, and curators support artistic development and professional confidence. The Masters Project provides an opportunity for an extensive individual investigation aligned with personal interests and career ambitions, allowing students to create substantial creative outputs such as exhibitions, publications, campaigns, artefacts, and digital works that showcase their artistic vision and professional capabilities. Sustainability and Practice focuses on helping students build sustainable and adaptable careers while exploring how artistic practice can contribute to areas such as education, research, commerce, and public engagement. The module encourages reflection on ecological responsibility, sustainability in art, and the role of creative practice in responding to global challenges such as climate change, while supporting students in creating professional digital portfolios and career development plans. The Connected Practitioner module strengthens creative research skills and interdisciplinary collaboration by encouraging engagement with contemporary debates, policies, and audiences across the arts and creative industries. Through lectures, seminars, studio sessions, and collaborative discussions, students develop the research, communication, and critical thinking skills required for successful careers as professional artists, curators, educators, researchers, and creative practitioners within an evolving global cultural landscape.
