COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Education (TESOL) course provides advanced knowledge and practical expertise in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages while developing strong research and professional skills. The Approaches in English Language Teaching module explores both traditional and contemporary methods of English language teaching, learning and assessment across a variety of educational contexts. You develop the ability to critically evaluate teaching approaches and adapt lesson plans to meet the needs of different learners and learning environments. The Combining Professional and Academic Practice module brings together students from diverse educational backgrounds, enabling you to explore a professional issue relevant to your own practice while applying contemporary educational theories and research to improve teaching and learning outcomes. Through the Educational Research: Practice and Planning module, you develop a detailed understanding of educational research methods and gain the skills required to design and conduct an independent research project. The Using the Literature to Inform Educational Research module strengthens your ability to conduct literature searches, evaluate research sources and develop comprehensive literature reviews related to current debates and issues in TESOL. The Dissertation is the major research component of the programme and allows you to work closely with an academic supervisor to investigate a specialist topic within TESOL that aligns with your professional interests and career goals. Throughout the course, you develop advanced skills in critical thinking, communication, research, reflective practice and language teaching methodology. Graduates are prepared for careers in English language teaching, teacher training, curriculum development, educational leadership, international education and academic research, while the programme also provides an excellent foundation for doctoral study in TESOL, applied linguistics or education.
