COURSE CURRICULUM

This course provides students with an advanced understanding of contemporary curatorial practice through a combination of theoretical study, professional development, and practical project work. The Curating Collections and Access module develops knowledge of collections management, development, and display while encouraging engagement with inclusive, accessible, and decolonial approaches to curatorial practice. Students explore how collections can be interpreted and presented to diverse audiences while gaining insight into institutional practices, audience development, communication strategies, interpretation methods, events management, and learning programmes that support public engagement within museums and galleries. The Global Critical Contexts module strengthens students' understanding of the social, political, ethical, and conceptual issues that influence contemporary curating and cultural institutions. Through the study of historical and current theories, practices, and debates, students develop advanced research, analytical, and communication skills while critically examining topics such as representation, identity, diversity, sustainability, and the changing role of curators in society. The programme culminates in the Major Project: Curatorial Practice module, which provides an advanced professional learning environment where students create and demonstrate an original body of curatorial work to a high standard. Supported through project supervision and guidance, students develop their own creative voice and curatorial identity while producing a portfolio of research, contextual analysis, and professional documentation alongside the design and presentation of an exhibition, event, or public project for an audience. This final project allows students to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experience while showcasing their professional capabilities and creative vision.
