COURSE CURRICULUM

This master's programme provides a comprehensive and professionally focused exploration of comics, graphic storytelling, and visual communication through a carefully designed set of core modules that combine creativity, research, and industry engagement. The module Adaption and Interpretation for Comics develops students' abilities to transform stories, concepts, and ideas from a range of sources into engaging visual narratives, exploring techniques such as adaptation, sequencing, character development, and visual storytelling while encouraging innovative approaches to interpretation. Developing a Personal Voice in Comics focuses on helping students establish a distinctive artistic identity by refining their creative style, experimenting with different techniques, and building confidence in their own visual language and storytelling methods. Through critical reflection, practical projects, and feedback from tutors and peers, students strengthen their individual creative practice and professional identity. Engaging with the Comics Industry introduces students to the realities of contemporary creative industries, including publishing, freelance work, intellectual property, contracts, pitching ideas, networking, self-promotion, and entrepreneurship, ensuring graduates are well prepared for professional careers in comics and related sectors. The Connected Practitioner module encourages collaboration, interdisciplinary practice, and reflective learning, helping students understand how comics and visual storytelling can contribute to wider cultural, social, educational, and professional contexts while developing valuable communication and teamwork skills. The programme culminates in the Masters Project, where students independently design and produce a substantial body of original work that demonstrates their creative, technical, and research capabilities while showcasing their professional development and career ambitions. Together, these modules provide students with the knowledge, practical experience, and industry awareness needed to succeed as comic artists, illustrators, writers, storytellers, and creative professionals in a rapidly evolving global creative landscape.
