COURSE CURRICULUM

This course is designed for aspiring character animators who want to develop advanced skills for careers in the film, television, visual effects, and games industries. Created by academic staff with extensive professional experience, the programme focuses on the artistic, technical, and performance aspects of animation while reflecting real-world studio practices and production pipelines. Students begin by developing a strong understanding of movement and animation principles through the Body Mechanics module, where they learn to create realistic and believable character motion. The Character Performance module builds on these foundations by exploring acting, emotion, storytelling, and facial expression, enabling students to create engaging and authentic animated performances. Through the Creatures module, students develop specialist skills in animating non-human characters and complex movements, broadening their creative and technical capabilities for visual effects and games production. The Art of Performance Capture introduces students to modern motion capture technologies and workflows, allowing them to work with industry-standard performance capture systems and understand how these technologies are used in contemporary production environments. Industry Research and Development encourages students to investigate emerging technologies, production techniques, and trends within animation and digital media while developing critical and professional skills relevant to the sector. The AVFX Group Project provides valuable collaborative experience, allowing students to work in multidisciplinary teams on industry-style projects that replicate professional studio environments and workflows. Throughout the programme, students have access to specialist animation studios, performance capture facilities, a sound stage, green screen technology, and industry-standard software, ensuring they graduate with practical experience and a professional portfolio.
