COURSE CURRICULUM

This course is designed for aspiring animators, filmmakers, and visual storytellers who want to develop the creative and technical skills required to produce an original animated short film from concept to festival-ready completion. The programme combines practical production experience with critical understanding of animation theory and industry practice, preparing students for careers within the global animation and creative industries. Students begin by exploring the structure and language of animated storytelling through the Anatomy of a Film module, gaining insight into narrative techniques and the production process behind successful films. Through Script and Pitch, students develop original ideas and learn how to professionally present projects to studios, industry professionals, and funding organisations. The Production Design module focuses on visual storytelling, character development, environments, and artistic direction, while Creative Animation allows students to experiment with animation techniques and refine their own creative style. Industry Practice provides valuable knowledge of professional workflows, production management, and the contemporary animation sector, ensuring graduates understand current industry expectations and opportunities. During the production stage, students use specialist studios, workshops, and technical facilities to create their projects using either 2D animation or stop-motion techniques while developing skills in directing, editing, sound design, and performance. The Final Film module brings together all aspects of learning, enabling students to complete a professional short film suitable for festival submissions and portfolio development. Students may also choose the Advanced Practice route, which includes an Internship, providing valuable industry experience and the opportunity to apply classroom learning within a professional environment. Supported by experienced academic staff and technical specialists, graduates leave with a strong portfolio, advanced production skills, and the confidence to pursue careers in animation studios, film production companies, independent filmmaking, and wider creative industries worldwide.
