COURSE CURRICULUM

The Law degree at Teesside University is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the legal system while developing practical, analytical and professional skills required for a wide range of legal and non-legal careers. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation in core legal principles through modules covering constitutional law, administrative law, civil liberties and human rights, the English legal system, contract law, tort law and the practical application of law in modern society. These modules introduce key legal concepts and develop essential skills in legal reasoning, research and argument construction. During the second year, students build on this knowledge by studying criminal law, employment law, equity and trusts, and European Union law, while also exploring research methods, career development and future professional opportunities within the legal sector. Students can further enhance their employability through optional modules such as work experience or land law, allowing them to gain practical insight into legal practice and professional environments. In the final year, students undertake an independent dissertation that enables them to research and analyse a legal topic of personal interest in depth, strengthening their investigative and critical thinking abilities. Alongside this, students choose from a variety of specialist modules including family law, international business law, medical law, welfare and immigration law, civil and criminal evidence, wills and probate, litigation and advocacy, and participation in the university's Law Clinic. These options allow students to tailor their studies to their interests and career ambitions while gaining practical legal experience. Throughout the programme, students develop expertise in legal research, communication, negotiation and problem-solving, preparing them for careers in legal practice, criminal justice, public services, business and a wide range of professional sectors.
