COURSE CURRICULUM

This Law and Criminal Justice degree combines legal studies with criminology and criminal justice, providing students with a strong understanding of both the legal system and the social issues surrounding crime and punishment. The course is designed for students from all backgrounds and develops the ability to think critically, question assumptions, analyse complex information and communicate arguments effectively. In the first year, students study the foundations of law, including Administrative Law, Constitutional Principles of the UK and the EU, Contract Law, the English Legal System, Crime and Society, and Issues in Criminal Justice, building a broad understanding of legal and criminal justice systems. During the second year, students explore Criminal Law, Criminological Theory in Practice, Tort Law, Equity and Trusts, and career development, while also having the opportunity to undertake employability and work-related learning or study policing. In the final year, students complete a Law Dissertation and study Penology, alongside optional modules such as Family Law, Medical Law, Land Law, Litigation and Advocacy, Social Movements, Drugs in Society, Welfare and Immigration Law, and Law Clinic. The programme combines traditional legal education with innovative teaching methods including seminars, debates, practical exercises and real-world learning experiences. Students can gain valuable professional experience through the award-winning Law Clinic, which provides free legal advice to members of the community in partnership with legal professionals and voluntary organisations. Graduates develop highly transferable skills valued across many sectors, including legal practice, criminal justice, policing, probation services, government, charities, business, management and human resources, while benefiting from strong industry links and excellent career opportunities.
