COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport and Exercise Science course is structured over three years and is designed to develop students' understanding of the scientific principles that underpin sports performance, exercise, health, and wellbeing. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology, motor learning, and the social aspects of sport and physical activity while gaining an introduction to the role of the sport and exercise science practitioner. Students may also undertake an optional vocational practice module to gain additional practical experience. During the second year, the course focuses on current research in sport and exercise science, health physiology, human movement, exercise psychology, and the role of physical activity in improving public health and wellbeing. Students also complete a work placement module that provides valuable professional experience within the sport and exercise sector. In the final year, students develop advanced knowledge and practical skills related to human performance assessment, performance interventions, physical education, and school sport, while completing an independent science research project and a further work placement module to enhance employability. Optional vocational practice modules are available throughout the programme to provide additional industry experience and professional development opportunities. Throughout the course, students develop practical laboratory, research, communication, teamwork, and digital skills using advanced facilities and equipment, preparing them for careers in sports performance, coaching, health promotion, exercise science, rehabilitation support, and further postgraduate study.
