COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology course is structured over three years and is designed to develop students' understanding of society, social institutions, crime, politics, and contemporary social issues. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in social science by exploring the principles of sociology, the relationship between crime and society, media representations, and political ideologies. The second year expands this knowledge through the study of social identities, institutions, policing, social theory, public policy, and research methods, while also preparing students for future careers and postgraduate opportunities within the social sciences. In the final year, students undertake an independent dissertation project that allows them to investigate a sociological topic of personal interest in greater depth while studying contemporary sociological issues and the ways societies understand and interpret the past. Students can further tailor their studies by selecting optional modules such as social movements or the role of drugs within society. Throughout the programme, students develop advanced analytical, research, communication, and critical thinking skills that are highly valued by employers across sectors including public services, journalism, social research, community development, policy, and non-governmental organisations.
