COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology and Counselling course is structured over three years and is designed to progressively develop students' understanding of psychological theory, counselling practice, and research skills. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in psychology, counselling theories, mental health, psychopathology, critical thinking, and psychological research methods while exploring the application of psychology to everyday life and contemporary issues. The second year expands students' knowledge across the core areas of psychology, including biological psychology, cognition, developmental psychology, and individual differences, while developing practical understanding of counselling theories, skills, and therapeutic techniques used within professional practice. During the final year, students focus on multicultural counselling approaches, service evaluation, and complete an independent psychology dissertation that strengthens their research, analytical, and critical thinking abilities. Students also choose from a range of optional modules that allow them to specialise in areas such as clinical psychopathology, neurodevelopmental disorders, trauma, health promotion, cyberpsychology, therapeutic care, and employability-focused learning. Throughout the programme, students develop strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and research skills that are highly valued in psychology, counselling, healthcare, social care, education, and related professions. The course prepares graduates for a variety of careers while also providing an excellent foundation for postgraduate training and further professional development in counselling and psychology.
