COURSE CURRICULUM

The Pharmaceutical Science course is structured over three years, with an optional work placement year, and is designed to progressively develop students' knowledge of chemistry, biology, and pharmaceutical sciences. In the first year, students establish a strong scientific foundation through the study of biochemistry, cell biology, organic chemistry, chemical reactivity, molecular structure, bonding, and essential laboratory techniques. The second year builds on this knowledge by introducing more advanced topics including molecular biology, bioinformatics, human metabolism, clinical biochemistry, fermentation technology, structural biochemistry, and analytical techniques used for structure determination. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional work placement year to gain valuable industry experience and enhance their employability. In the final year, the programme focuses on specialist areas such as medicinal chemistry, drug discovery, biologics, biotherapeutics, and health product development, providing students with an understanding of modern pharmaceutical research and innovation. Students also complete an independent research project that develops their scientific investigation, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Throughout the programme, theoretical learning is supported by extensive practical laboratory experience using modern scientific equipment and facilities. The course prepares graduates for careers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, and life sciences sectors, as well as for postgraduate study and research opportunities.
