COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mental Health Nursing course is structured over three years and is designed to progressively develop students' knowledge, clinical skills, and professional competencies required for specialist mental health nursing practice. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation in nursing fundamentals, evidence-based decision-making, communication, professionalism, and understanding health and illness across a range of healthcare settings. The second year introduces specialist mental health nursing content, focusing on clinical interventions, advanced decision-making, service improvement, and the delivery of care for individuals experiencing mental health conditions and cognitive challenges. During the final year, students further enhance their expertise in mental health nursing interventions and evidence-based practice while developing greater independence and professional responsibility within clinical environments. Students also complete a dissertation project to strengthen their research, analytical, and critical thinking abilities. Throughout the programme, academic learning is integrated with extensive clinical placements, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real healthcare settings and develop the skills required for professional practice. The course prepares graduates to become compassionate, competent, and confident mental health nurses who can support recovery, promote wellbeing, and provide person-centred care across a variety of healthcare and community settings.
