COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Human Biology course at Teesside University provides a comprehensive understanding of human health, disease and the biological processes that influence wellbeing throughout life. In the first year, students develop a strong scientific foundation through modules in anatomy and physiology, application of health sciences, biochemistry and chemical science, cell biology, microbiology and pathology. These subjects introduce the structure and function of the human body, disease mechanisms and the scientific principles underpinning modern healthcare. In the second year, students build on this knowledge by studying clinical pharmacology, human development, immunology, life course and health, molecular biology and bioinformatics, while also undertaking a health science project that develops research and analytical skills. An optional work placement year offers valuable industry experience, enabling students to gain professional skills and enhance their employability. The final year focuses on advanced and contemporary topics, including biologics and health product development, health technologies, human ageing and disease, and medical microbiology. Students also complete an independent science research project, allowing them to investigate a specialist area of interest and apply the scientific, practical and critical thinking skills developed throughout the degree. The programme places significant emphasis on practical laboratory training, professional practice and transferable skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, scientific writing and presentations. Graduates gain an excellent understanding of how lifestyle, environmental factors and ageing affect human health and are equipped with the knowledge and practical expertise required for careers in healthcare, biomedical research, public health and the wider biosciences sector. The course also provides an excellent foundation for postgraduate study in areas such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing, public health, diagnostic radiography and other health-related professions, preparing students to contribute effectively to the rapidly evolving field of human health and life sciences.
