The BSc (Hons) Games Programming course at Teesside University provides a comprehensive education in software development and game technologies, preparing students for careers in the global games industry. In the first year, students build strong foundations through modules in Algorithmic Problem Solving, Game Creation, Game Programming Fundamentals and Game Software Engineering. These modules develop essential programming skills, problem-solving techniques and an understanding of software engineering principles used in game development. In the second year, students advance their technical knowledge through Games Engine Construction, Journeyman, Mobile and Multiplayer, and Programming for Game Engines. They learn how game engines are built, develop multiplayer and mobile gaming applications, and gain practical experience using industry-standard technologies and development tools. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional work placement year, gaining valuable industry experience, enhancing employability and developing professional networks. In the final year, students focus on specialist topics through modules in 3D Graphics, AI for Games and a major Games Project. These modules allow students to explore advanced programming concepts, artificial intelligence techniques and graphics programming while creating a substantial game project that showcases their technical and creative abilities. The course benefits from Teesside University's outstanding reputation as the number one video game design and development school in the UK and fifth in Europe according to GAMEducation 2025. Students also gain access to industry events such as Animex, game jams, hackathons and ExpoSeries, where they can connect with leading employers and industry professionals. Through initiatives such as the Power UP Indie Games Accelerator and free membership of the British Computer Society, students receive additional support for career development and entrepreneurship. By graduation, students possess advanced programming expertise, strong software engineering skills and practical experience, preparing them for careers as games programmers, engine developers, AI programmers, graphics programmers and software engineers in the rapidly evolving interactive entertainment industry.
