COURSE CURRICULUM
The BSc (Hons) Games Development course at Teesside University combines creative game design with advanced programming and technical development skills to prepare students for careers in the global games industry. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules in Game Creation, Game Programming Fundamentals, Gameplay Scripting and Industry Briefs, learning the principles of coding, game mechanics and collaborative project development. During the second year, the focus shifts towards professional and technical expertise with modules in Games Business, Marketing and Publishing, Journeyman, Programming for Game Engines and Technical Design. Students gain experience using industry-standard game engines and technologies while developing an understanding of the commercial aspects of the games sector. An optional work placement year allows students to gain valuable industry experience, improve their professional skills and build networks with employers. In the final year, students undertake Advanced Development Techniques, Beta Arcade and a major Games Project, where they apply their knowledge to create sophisticated games and showcase their abilities to industry professionals. The course benefits from Teesside University's reputation as the number one video game design and development school in the UK and fifth in Europe according to GAMEducation 2025. Students also have access to industry events such as Animex, game jams, hackathons and ExpoSeries, where they can connect with leading employers and demonstrate their talents. The programme encourages innovation and entrepreneurship through initiatives such as the Power UP Indie Games Accelerator, supporting students who wish to establish their own game studios. By graduation, students possess strong programming skills, technical expertise, problem-solving abilities and practical experience, making them well prepared for careers as gameplay programmers, game developers, technical designers, software engineers and interactive media professionals in the rapidly evolving digital entertainment industry.
