COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Science course is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in biological and chemical sciences alongside practical training in crime scene investigation and forensic analysis, preparing them for professional roles in forensic laboratories and criminal justice settings. In the first year, students develop core scientific knowledge through modules including Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry and Chemical Science, and Cell Biology, alongside applied forensic modules such as Crime Scene Examination, Forensic Case Studies and the Law, and Forensic Evidence and Recovery. These introduce essential concepts in human biology, chemistry, and cell biology while also training students in crime scene procedures, evidence collection, forensic interpretation, and the legal context of forensic science. In the second year, students build on this foundation with more specialised study through Bioarchaeology and Human Remains Recovery, Forensic Analytical Investigations, Forensic Biology Practice, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics, Professional Practice and the Expert Witness, and Trace Evidence and Forensic Enhancement. These modules develop expertise in human remains analysis, biological evidence examination, molecular techniques, data analysis, forensic enhancement methods, and the professional responsibilities of expert witnesses within legal proceedings. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional work placement year, allowing them to gain practical industry experience, apply their scientific and investigative skills in real-world environments, and improve their employability. In the final year, the programme focuses on advanced forensic science through Forensic Biology and Genomics, Human Identification and Forensic Imaging, Serious Crime Investigation, and Substances of Misuse, alongside a Science Research Project that enables independent investigation of a specialist topic. These modules develop advanced understanding of DNA analysis, human identification techniques, forensic imaging technologies, complex crime investigation, and the scientific analysis of controlled or misused substances. Throughout the programme, students progressively develop strong expertise in biology, chemistry, forensic analysis, genetics, bioinformatics, and investigative science while strengthening their laboratory, analytical, research, and professional skills. This combination of scientific knowledge, practical forensic training, research experience, and optional workplace learning prepares graduates for careers in forensic science, crime scene investigation, laboratory analysis, forensic biology, law enforcement support, and related scientific and criminal justice professions.
