COURSE CURRICULUM

The Finance and Investment programme at Teesside University provides students with a strong foundation in finance, economics, investment, and quantitative analysis while preparing them for careers in the rapidly evolving financial sector. In the first year, students develop essential knowledge through modules in Accounting Principles and Systems, Introduction to Economic Principles, Principles of Finance and Investment, and Quantitative Methods in Business and Economics. These modules introduce financial accounting, economic theories, investment concepts, risk and return, asset valuation, and mathematical and statistical techniques used in business and economics. During the second year, students advance their expertise through Applied Mathematics and Statistics for Economists, Banking and Financial Institutions, Financial Technology, and Investment and Risk Analysis. They gain an understanding of financial institutions, banking operations, fintech innovations such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, cybersecurity, investment strategies, portfolio management, and asset valuation using professional statistical software. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional work placement year, allowing them to gain valuable industry experience, develop professional and transferable skills, and improve their career prospects. In the final year, students study Financial Econometrics and Data Analysis Project, Portfolio Management and Financial Derivatives, Strategic Finance, and Sustainable Finance and Investment. These modules focus on econometric modelling, data analysis, investment strategies, derivative instruments, corporate finance, risk management, and the growing importance of sustainability in financial decision-making. Throughout the programme, students work with real financial data and develop strong analytical, quantitative, and technical skills using industry-standard tools and software. The course prepares graduates for careers in investment banking, financial analysis, portfolio management, corporate finance, risk management, and other areas of the global financial services industry while equipping them with the expertise needed for data-driven and sustainable financial decision-making.
