COURSE CURRICULUM
The Criminology and Psychology course is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of crime, criminal behaviour, and psychological theory while developing strong research, analytical, and critical thinking skills. In the first year, students establish a solid foundation through modules including Becoming a Social Scientist, Crime and Society, Criminal Law for Criminologists, and Issues in Criminal Justice, gaining knowledge of criminological concepts, criminal law, social research methods, and the operation of the criminal justice system. During the second year, students deepen their understanding by studying Biological and Social Psychology, Criminological Theory in Practice, Police and Policing, and Theoretical Approaches to Forensic Psychology, exploring the biological and social influences on behaviour, the practical application of criminological theories, policing practices, and psychological approaches to understanding criminal behaviour and forensic investigations. They also complete Future Directions and Research for Social Scientists, developing advanced research skills and preparing for independent academic investigation. In the final year, students study Applied Forensic Psychology, focusing on the practical application of psychological principles within criminal justice settings, alongside Current Issues in Neurodevelopmental Disorders, which examines contemporary research and the impact of neurodevelopmental conditions on individuals and society. They also study Penology, exploring punishment, prisons, rehabilitation, and offender management, while completing a Criminology and Sociology Dissertation that allows them to conduct in-depth research on a topic of personal interest. Students further personalise their studies by selecting one optional module from Applied Forensic Psychology, Psychology of Everyday Self, Social Movements, or Understanding Drugs in Society, enabling them to develop specialist knowledge aligned with their academic and career goals. Throughout the programme, students progressively develop expertise in criminology, psychology, forensic psychology, policing, criminal law, research methods, and offender rehabilitation while strengthening their communication, analytical, and professional skills. This combination of academic knowledge, practical understanding, and research experience prepares graduates for careers in criminal justice, policing, probation, forensic services, rehabilitation, victim support, community services, research, and a wide range of psychology-related and public sector professions. Modules offered may vary.
