COURSE CURRICULUM

The Crime Scene Science and Investigation course is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of crime scene investigation, forensic science, intelligence analysis, and evidence management while developing the practical and analytical skills required for investigative careers. In the first year, students establish a strong scientific and investigative foundation through modules including Anatomy and Physiology, Crime Scene Examination, Crime Scene Photography, Forensic Case Studies and the Law, Forensic Evidence and Recovery, and Intelligence and Digital Investigation. These modules introduce the principles of human anatomy, crime scene processing, forensic photography, evidence collection and preservation, legal procedures, and intelligence gathering techniques. During the second year, students build on this knowledge by studying Bioarchaeology and Human Remains Recovery, Crime Scene Investigation, Crime Series Analysis, Forensic Analytical Investigations, Major Incident Investigation, and Professional Practice and the Expert Witness. These subjects develop expertise in investigating complex crime scenes, recovering and analysing human remains, identifying crime patterns, applying forensic analytical methods, managing major investigations, and understanding the professional responsibilities of expert witnesses within the criminal justice system. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional work placement year, enabling them to gain valuable industry experience, apply their investigative knowledge in a professional environment, and enhance their employability. In the final year, the programme focuses on advanced investigative practice through Business Intelligence and Investigation, Human Identification and Forensic Imaging, Intelligence Analysis, and Serious Crime Investigation, where students explore advanced intelligence techniques, forensic imaging, human identification methods, and the investigation of complex and serious criminal offences. Students also complete an independent Science Research Project, demonstrating their ability to research, analyse, and evaluate a specialist forensic or investigative topic while strengthening their scientific, analytical, and professional skills. Throughout the programme, students progressively develop expertise in crime scene examination, forensic evidence recovery, intelligence analysis, forensic imaging, investigative techniques, legal procedures, and scientific research while enhancing their communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and professional abilities. This combination of academic knowledge, practical laboratory and crime scene experience, industry-focused learning, research, and optional workplace experience prepares graduates for careers in crime scene investigation, forensic science, intelligence analysis, law enforcement, environmental crime investigation, insurance fraud investigation, and the wider criminal justice sector.
