COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science course at Teesside University provides a comprehensive education in human health, disease, and clinical laboratory science, preparing students for careers in healthcare, diagnostic laboratories, and biomedical research. In the first year, students build a strong scientific foundation by studying anatomy and physiology, biochemistry and chemical science, cell biology, medical laboratory science, microbiology, and pathology, developing an understanding of the structure and function of the human body and the causes of disease. During the second year, the course advances into specialised biomedical topics, including clinical pharmacology, diagnostic and experimental pathology, human development, human metabolism and clinical biochemistry, immunology, and molecular biology and bioinformatics. These modules allow students to explore disease mechanisms, drug actions, immune responses, and modern molecular techniques used in diagnosis and research. In the final year, students focus on professional and clinical applications through modules in clinical biochemistry, clinical genetics, clinical haematology and transfusion science, and medical microbiology. They also undertake an independent science research project, enabling them to investigate a specialised area of biomedical science while developing advanced research, analytical, and scientific communication skills. Throughout the programme, students gain extensive laboratory experience and learn essential professional skills such as quality assurance, health and safety procedures, scientific reporting, teamwork, and problem-solving. The curriculum is closely aligned with the requirements of the biomedical profession and provides valuable experience relevant to hospital laboratories and the wider healthcare sector.
