COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence course at Teesside University combines fundamental computing knowledge with advanced AI technologies, preparing students for careers in one of the world's fastest-growing technology sectors. In the first year, students develop essential technical skills through modules in Algorithmic Problem Solving, Object Oriented Programming, Secure Computers and Networks, and Systems Design and Databases. These modules provide a strong foundation in programming, software development, cybersecurity and database systems. During the second year, students explore specialist topics including Artificial Intelligence, Enterprise Project, Relational and NoSQL Databases, and Web Apps and Services. They gain practical experience in developing intelligent systems, managing modern databases and creating web-based applications while working on collaborative projects that mirror real industry environments. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional work placement year, enabling them to gain valuable professional experience and build industry connections. In the final year, the course focuses on advanced and contemporary topics through modules in AI Ethics, Applied Machine Learning and a major Computing Project. Students examine the ethical implications of artificial intelligence, develop machine learning solutions and complete an independent project that demonstrates their technical and analytical abilities. Throughout the degree, students benefit from strong industry links, participating in live projects, competitions and hackathons with organisations including Cisco, Sage, TUI, Atombank and HMRC. They also receive free membership of the British Computer Society, providing access to professional development resources, mentoring and employment opportunities. Through ExpoSeries and the university's innovative Cloud Labs, students gain exposure to industry-standard technologies and showcase their work to potential employers. By graduation, students possess advanced knowledge of artificial intelligence, machine learning, software development and data management, preparing them for careers as AI engineers, machine learning specialists, software developers, data scientists and technology consultants across a wide range of industries.
