The Mechanical Engineering course is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of engineering design, manufacturing, mechanics, and sustainable technologies while developing the practical and analytical skills required for professional engineering careers. In the first year, students establish a strong engineering foundation through modules including Electrical Principles (AC/DC), Engineering Mathematics, Materials and Sustainability, Mechanical Engineering Practice, Structural Mechanics, and Thermofluids. These modules introduce the fundamental concepts of electrical engineering, engineering mathematics, material properties, sustainable engineering, mechanical systems, structural behaviour, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. During the second year, students build on this knowledge by studying Aeroengines and Rocket Science, Applied Mathematical Methods, Manufacturing Processes, Mechanics of Materials 1, and Product and Assembly Design Modelling, while completing a Group Design and Build Project that develops teamwork, engineering design, project management, and practical problem-solving skills through the creation of an engineering solution. These modules provide expertise in propulsion systems, advanced mathematical analysis, manufacturing technologies, material behaviour under load, and computer-aided product design and assembly. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional work placement year, enabling them to gain valuable industry experience, apply their technical knowledge in a professional engineering environment, and enhance their employability. In the final year, the programme focuses on advanced engineering topics through Computer Aided Analysis, Dynamics and Vibration, Mechanics of Materials 2, and Sustainable Systems and Industry 4.0, where students explore advanced simulation techniques, mechanical system dynamics, vibration analysis, structural performance, sustainable engineering practices, smart manufacturing, automation, and Industry 4.0 technologies. Students also complete an independent Project that demonstrates their ability to research, design, analyse, and evaluate a substantial mechanical engineering solution while strengthening their project management and professional engineering skills. Throughout the programme, students progressively develop expertise in mechanical design, manufacturing, materials engineering, structural mechanics, thermofluids, computer-aided engineering, sustainability, and advanced engineering technologies while enhancing their analytical, technical, communication, and problem-solving abilities. This combination of academic knowledge, practical laboratory experience, industry-focused learning, and optional workplace experience prepares graduates for careers in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, product design, automotive, aerospace, energy, industrial engineering, and a wide range of engineering-related professions.
