COURSE CURRICULUM

The Instrumentation and Control Engineering course is structured to develop students' expertise in measurement systems, automation, control engineering, and industrial technologies while providing the practical and analytical skills required for professional engineering careers. In the first year, students establish a strong engineering foundation through modules including Electrical Principles, Electronic Principles, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Practice, Physics and Instrumentation, and PLCs and Embedded Systems. These modules introduce the core concepts of electrical and electronic engineering, engineering mathematics, practical engineering techniques, instrumentation, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and embedded systems. During the second year, students build on this knowledge by studying Industrial Communications, Instrumentation and Control Design and Implementation, Integral Transforms and Matrices, Linear Systems and Control, Measurement Systems, and Multidisciplinary Software and Systems. These subjects develop expertise in industrial communication networks, control system design, advanced mathematical methods, measurement technologies, automation, and integrated software and hardware systems used in modern industrial environments. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional work placement year, allowing them to gain valuable industry experience, apply their technical knowledge in a professional setting, and enhance their employability. In the final year, the programme focuses on advanced engineering topics through Advanced Sensors, Control, Digital Control and Instrumentation, and Sustainable Systems and Industry 4.0, where students explore intelligent sensing technologies, advanced control systems, digital instrumentation, automation, sustainable engineering, and smart manufacturing technologies. Students also complete an independent Project that demonstrates their ability to research, design, develop, analyse, and evaluate a substantial instrumentation and control engineering solution while strengthening their project management and professional engineering skills. Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, and practical laboratory sessions, supported by independent study, coursework, and project-based learning. Assessment includes coursework assignments, laboratory reports, project reports, presentations, and formal examinations, allowing students to demonstrate both theoretical understanding and practical competence. Throughout the programme, students progressively develop expertise in instrumentation, control engineering, automation, embedded systems, industrial communications, digital control, measurement systems, and Industry 4.0 technologies while strengthening their analytical, technical, communication, and problem-solving skills. This combination of academic knowledge, practical laboratory experience, industry-focused learning, and optional workplace experience prepares graduates for careers in instrumentation and control engineering, industrial automation, manufacturing, energy, process engineering, robotics, and a wide range of engineering and technology-related professions. Modules offered may vary.
