COURSE CURRICULUM

The Energy Engineering course is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of renewable energy technologies, sustainable engineering, and modern power systems while developing the practical and analytical skills required for professional engineering careers. In the first year, students establish a strong engineering foundation through modules including Clean Energy and Sustainability, Electrical Principles (AC/DC), Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Practice, Materials and Sustainability, and Thermofluids. These modules introduce the fundamentals of sustainable energy, electrical engineering, mathematics, practical engineering skills, engineering materials, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. During the second year, students build on this knowledge by studying Applied Mathematical Methods, Building Energy Performance and Modelling, Energy Planning and Project Management, Hydrogen Fuels, Product and Assembly Design Modelling, and Solar, Geothermal, Wind and Tidal Energy Systems. These subjects develop expertise in energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, hydrogen as a transition fuel, energy project management, engineering design, and the analysis of solar, wind, geothermal, and tidal power systems. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional work placement year, enabling them to gain valuable industry experience, apply their technical knowledge in a professional environment, and enhance their employability. In the final year, the programme focuses on advanced energy engineering topics through Electric Power Systems, Environmental and Sustainable Processing, Renewable Energy and Low Carbon Systems, and Sustainable Systems and Industry 4.0, where students explore power generation and distribution, low-carbon technologies, sustainable industrial processes, smart systems, automation, and Industry 4.0 innovations. Students also complete an independent Project that demonstrates their ability to research, design, analyse, and evaluate a substantial energy engineering solution while developing project management and professional engineering skills. Throughout the programme, students progressively develop expertise in renewable energy, power systems, hydrogen technologies, energy efficiency, sustainability, environmental engineering, project management, and smart industrial systems while strengthening their analytical, technical, communication, and problem-solving abilities. This combination of academic knowledge, practical laboratory experience, industry-focused learning, and optional workplace experience prepares graduates for careers in energy engineering, renewable energy, power generation, sustainable technologies, environmental management, and the wider clean energy sector.
