The Chemical Engineering course is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of chemical processes, engineering principles, and sustainable industrial technologies while developing the practical and analytical skills required for professional engineering careers. In the first year, students establish a strong scientific and engineering foundation through modules including Engineering Mathematics, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics, Mass and Energy Balances, Practical Skills for Chemical Engineers, Science for Chemical Engineers, and Thermodynamics for Chemical Engineers. These modules develop essential knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, thermodynamics, fluid flow, energy transfer, and the practical laboratory skills needed for chemical engineering. During the second year, students build on this foundation by studying Applied Mathematical Methods, Chemical Process Design, Control and Simulation, Practical and Professional Skills, Process Operations, and Reactors and Bioreactors. These subjects develop expertise in designing and optimising chemical processes, process control systems, simulation techniques, industrial operations, reactor design, biotechnology applications, and professional engineering practice. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional work placement year, allowing them to gain valuable industry experience, apply their technical knowledge in a professional environment, and strengthen their employability. In the final year, the programme focuses on advanced chemical engineering through modules including Advanced Process Operations, Chemical Engineering in Industry, Environment and Sustainable Processing, and Reactors and Catalysis, where students explore industrial-scale processing, sustainable manufacturing, environmental protection, catalytic processes, and advanced reactor technologies. Students also complete an independent Chemical Engineering Project, demonstrating their ability to research, design, analyse, and evaluate a substantial engineering solution while developing project management and professional engineering skills. Throughout the programme, students progressively develop expertise in process engineering, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, chemical reaction engineering, process design, sustainability, environmental management, and industrial operations while strengthening their analytical, technical, and problem-solving abilities. This combination of academic knowledge, practical laboratory experience, industry-focused learning, and optional workplace experience prepares graduates for careers in chemical engineering, energy, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, environmental engineering, manufacturing, process design, and a wide range of engineering-related industries.
