COURSE CURRICULUM
The Sport Journalism degree is designed to develop the practical, creative and professional skills required for careers in sports media and journalism across a variety of digital and traditional platforms. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation in journalism and media practice through modules such as Collaboration Project, Current Issues in Journalism and Media, Introduction to the Creative Industries and Journalism: Principles and Practice (News and Sport). These modules introduce students to news reporting, media ethics, storytelling techniques, editorial decision-making and the structure of the creative industries while encouraging collaboration and teamwork. During the second year, students further enhance their professional skills through modules including Creative Research Project, Industry Project, Practical Sports Journalism and Working in the Creative Industries. These modules focus on applying journalism techniques to sporting contexts, producing professional-quality sports content, undertaking research projects and gaining a deeper understanding of the media industry and career opportunities within it. Students develop experience in covering sporting events, creating multimedia content and working to professional deadlines while strengthening their communication and storytelling abilities. An optional work placement year allows students to gain valuable industry experience, establish professional networks and improve employability through workplace learning in media or sports organisations. In the final year, students complete a Major Project, giving them the opportunity to specialise in an area of sports journalism that matches their interests and career ambitions while demonstrating their research, technical and creative capabilities. The Professional Practice module supports students in preparing for employment by developing skills in portfolio creation, networking, project management and professional communication. Throughout the programme, students combine academic understanding with extensive practical experience using modern media technologies and digital storytelling methods. Graduates are well prepared for careers in sports journalism, broadcasting, digital media, communications, content creation and the wider creative industries, while also having opportunities to progress to postgraduate study.
