COURSE CURRICULUM

The course is structured to provide a balanced combination of academic study, professional practice and practical teaching experience over three years, with an optional work placement year available to enhance employability and industry experience. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation in education through modules covering the core curriculum, educational research and enquiry, professional practice, pedagogy and teaching methods, alongside wider curriculum studies in humanities, enrichment activities and practical subjects. These modules introduce key concepts in teaching, learning and child development while helping students understand the wider role of education in society. During the second year, students build upon this knowledge by exploring more advanced educational theories, developing stronger research skills and gaining greater experience in professional practice and classroom application. Modules continue to focus on curriculum knowledge, pedagogical approaches and the development of practical teaching skills, while wider curriculum studies broaden understanding across a range of subject areas and learning experiences. Students may also choose to undertake an optional work placement year, providing valuable opportunities to gain professional experience, apply academic learning in real educational settings and develop transferable skills that support future career progression. In the final year, the course places greater emphasis on independent learning, leadership and specialist subject development. Students complete an educational research dissertation, allowing them to investigate an area of personal or professional interest in depth while developing advanced analytical and research skills. Final-year professional practice and pedagogy modules further refine teaching expertise and reflective practice, while subject specialist development allows students to deepen their knowledge in a chosen area. Overall, the programme prepares graduates with the knowledge, practical skills and professional confidence required for careers in education and related sectors.
