COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music Production degree at Teesside University is structured to progressively develop students’ creative, technical and professional skills across three years of study, with an optional work placement year available to gain valuable industry experience. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in music production and the creative industries through modules such as Introduction to Music Production and Music Production Techniques, where they learn the essential principles of recording, editing, mixing and producing music using professional equipment and software. The Collaboration Project encourages teamwork and communication skills through interdisciplinary projects, while Introduction to the Creative Industries provides insight into how the music and wider creative sectors operate. During the second year, students deepen their knowledge and practical abilities through Music Production Practice, where they apply advanced production techniques and develop their own creative style. The Industry Project offers opportunities to work on real-world briefs and gain practical experience, while the Creative Research Project develops critical thinking and investigative skills. The Working in the Creative Industries module focuses on employability, entrepreneurship and understanding professional practice within the music sector. Students may also choose to undertake an optional placement year, allowing them to gain hands-on experience and establish professional networks before returning for their final year. In the final year, the Major Project enables students to produce an extensive portfolio or large-scale creative work that reflects their specialist interests and career ambitions. Alongside this, the Professional Practice module prepares students for employment by developing business awareness, networking skills and an understanding of the professional expectations of the music industry. Graduates leave with a strong portfolio, advanced production skills and the confidence to pursue careers in music production, sound design, recording, post-production and other creative industries.
