COURSE CURRICULUM
The Journalism degree is designed to develop the practical, creative and professional skills required for successful careers in modern journalism and media industries. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in journalism practice and media understanding through modules such as Collaboration Project, Current Issues in Journalism and Media, Introduction to the Creative Industries and Journalism: Principles and Practice (News and Sport). These modules introduce students to essential reporting techniques, news gathering, media ethics, storytelling and the structure of the creative industries while encouraging collaboration and teamwork. During the second year, students further develop their professional abilities through modules including Creative Research Project, Digital Storytelling (Sport, News and Public Relations), Industry Project and Working in the Creative Industries. Students learn to create engaging multimedia content for different audiences and platforms while strengthening their research, production and communication skills. They also gain valuable industry experience through projects that reflect real-world professional practice and develop a deeper understanding of employment opportunities within journalism, media and communications sectors. An optional work placement year provides students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in professional media organisations, develop industry contacts and enhance their employability through workplace learning. In the final year, students complete a Major Project, allowing them to specialise in an area of journalism or media production that aligns with their personal interests and career ambitions while demonstrating their research, technical and creative capabilities. The Professional Practice module prepares students for graduate employment by developing skills in portfolio building, networking, project management and professional communication. Throughout the programme, students combine theoretical understanding with practical experience using contemporary media technologies and storytelling methods. Graduates are well prepared for careers in journalism, broadcasting, sports media, public relations, digital communications, content creation and the wider creative industries, while also being equipped for postgraduate study opportunities.
