COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Interior Design course at Teesside University combines creative studio practice with professional design training to prepare students for careers in the interior design industry. In the first year, students build fundamental skills in architectural drawing, drafting, model making, visual communication and design history through the Introduction to Interior Design Skills and Practice module. They learn about the role of the designer, problem-solving methods and the relationship between design, society and the environment. Through Residential Design and Communication, students explore the interior design process, residential briefs, client requirements, computer-aided design and textile applications, developing their ideas into finished design proposals. Students also gain an understanding of the creative industries, networking and sustainability while improving teamwork and project management skills through collaborative projects. In the second year, students focus on commercial and branded environments, exploring workplace design, employee wellbeing and contemporary design issues. They develop advanced visualisation skills using industry-standard software such as SketchUp and Lumion and learn about bespoke surface design, branding and furniture design. Industry Project modules provide opportunities to tackle real-world challenges, competitions and interdisciplinary activities while building a professional portfolio. Students also undertake research projects and explore enterprise and social issues affecting creative industries. An optional work placement year enables students to gain valuable professional experience and enhance their employability. In the final year, students complete a Major Project, producing an extensive self-directed piece of creative work or research that demonstrates their technical, creative and professional development. The Professional Practice module prepares students for employment or further study by helping them refine their portfolios, build industry connections and develop career strategies. Throughout the course, students gain the creative confidence, technical expertise and professional skills needed to design innovative residential, commercial and public spaces and succeed in the evolving field of interior design.
