COURSE CURRICULUM

The History degree at Teesside University is structured over three years and provides a broad understanding of historical events, societies and political developments from ancient times to the modern era. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge by studying major topics such as American history from the Watergate era to contemporary politics, Britain and Europe since 1870, the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon, and the development of empires from Alexander the Great to the present while learning essential historical research skills, source analysis and interpretation techniques. During the second year, the focus shifts towards developing research abilities, career planning and deeper historical analysis through modules covering the history of North East England, revolutionary movements and social change, and the impact of war and conflict on societies. In the final year, students complete an independent dissertation, allowing them to conduct original research in an area of personal interest under academic supervision. They also study Thatcher's Britain and select from optional modules covering themes such as gender history, historical storytelling and interpretation, the rise and impact of Nazi Germany, and the Northern Ireland conflict known as The Troubles. Throughout the programme, students develop strong analytical, research, communication and critical thinking skills that prepare them for careers in education, government, public services, heritage organisations, media, business and many other professional sectors.
