COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Fine Art programme at Teesside University offers a practice-based and student-centred curriculum that encourages creativity, experimentation, and professional development. In the first year, students build essential skills through modules including Collaboration Project, Contemporary Studio Practice, Introduction to the Creative Industries, and Skills and Studio Practice. They develop teamwork, communication, project management, and problem-solving abilities while exploring contemporary art-making methods, historical and modern artistic practices, and a wide range of creative techniques and materials. Students learn to create self-directed studio projects, investigate different artistic perspectives, and safely use specialist equipment while gaining an understanding of the structure and opportunities within the creative industries. During the second year, students deepen their artistic practice through Creative Research Project, Expanding Studio Practice, Industry Project, and Working in the Creative Industries. They undertake research into contemporary issues, develop experimental and self-initiated projects, and explore diverse forms of artistic expression including painting, sculpture, photography, performance, video, digital media, text, sound, and installation practices. Industry-focused projects and interdisciplinary activities help students gain professional experience, project management skills, and an understanding of social, political, and environmental issues affecting contemporary art and creative practice. An optional work placement year provides valuable industry experience and strengthens technical, professional, and transferable skills. In the final year, students complete a Major Project, producing an independent body of creative work or portfolio that demonstrates critical thinking, research, and professional awareness. Alongside this, the Professional Practice module prepares students for employment, freelance work, or further study by focusing on portfolio development, networking, and career planning. Throughout the course, students develop their creative voice through studio practice, reflective journals, collaboration with peers and industry professionals, and engagement with the creative community through the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA). The programme equips graduates with the artistic, practical, and professional skills needed to succeed as contemporary artists and creative practitioners.
