COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Fashion programme at Teesside University combines creativity, technical expertise, and professional practice to prepare students for careers in fashion design, fashion communication, and the wider creative industries. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules including Collaboration Project, Introduction to Fashion Practice, Introduction to the Creative Industries, and The Fashion Project. They develop skills in teamwork, communication, project management, fashion design processes, research methods, and the creation of both digital and physical fashion solutions. Students also explore contemporary fashion practices, cultural and historical influences, garment production, pattern cutting, and professional visualisation techniques while developing an understanding of the global creative industries and the importance of sustainability. During the second year, students advance their knowledge through Creative Research Project, Fashion Image and Innovation, Industry Project, and Working in the Creative Industries. They develop critical thinking and research skills, explore garment design, pattern making, journalism, fashion promotion, storytelling, and the use of industry-standard software to create 3D fashion concepts and virtual environments. Students also undertake industry-focused projects, participate in competitions, and engage in interdisciplinary collaboration while considering social, political, and environmental challenges affecting the creative industries. An optional work placement year provides valuable professional experience, helping students strengthen technical and transferable skills, improve employability, and gain insight into workplace culture. In the final year, students complete a Major Project, producing an independent piece of creative work or professional portfolio that demonstrates their ability to research, analyse, and apply their learning to a chosen subject area. Alongside this, the Professional Practice module prepares students for employment, entrepreneurship, or further study by focusing on portfolio development, career planning, industry engagement, and networking opportunities. Throughout the programme, students develop their own creative identity while gaining the practical, technical, and professional skills needed to succeed in the dynamic and evolving global fashion industry.
