COURSE CURRICULUM

The Education Studies course is structured to provide students with a broad understanding of education across different stages of life while developing the knowledge, practical skills, and critical thinking required for a wide range of educational careers. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation through modules including Education and the State, Language and Learning, Learning Outside the Classroom, and Skills for Education, gaining an understanding of educational systems, language development, alternative learning environments, and the essential academic and professional skills needed for success in education. During the second year, students build on this knowledge by studying Diversity in Education: Reality or Rhetoric?, Safeguarding and Wellbeing, and Students as Tutors, exploring inclusive educational practice, child and learner wellbeing, safeguarding responsibilities, and practical teaching and mentoring skills. They also complete Future Directions in Education (Level 5), examining contemporary educational issues while developing advanced research and critical analysis skills. In the final year, students study Education, Identity and Society, analysing the relationship between education, identity, equality, and social change, alongside Supporting Vulnerable Children and Families, which focuses on strategies for supporting children, young people, and families facing additional challenges. Students also complete an independent Research Project, enabling them to investigate a specialist area of interest while demonstrating advanced research, analytical, and academic abilities. To further personalise their learning, students choose one optional module from Enhancing Children's Learning and Development or Future Directions in Education (Level 6), allowing them to deepen their understanding of child development or explore emerging educational issues in greater depth. Throughout the programme, students progressively develop expertise in education, inclusion, safeguarding, language and learning, educational policy, research methods, and professional practice while strengthening their communication, leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. This combination of academic knowledge, practical experience, and research-based learning prepares graduates for careers in teaching, learning support, educational administration, special educational needs, community education, mentoring, educational consultancy, and a wide range of education and public sector professions.
