ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Teesside University is a public university based in Middlesbrough in North East England, with a history rooted in technical and vocational education. Its origins date back to the Middlesbrough Mechanics’ Institute of 1844, although progress toward a formal institution was slow due to funding challenges. Significant momentum came from the Constantine family, whose financial support enabled the establishment of Constantine Technical College, which was officially opened in 1930 by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII. From its early years, the college provided both further and higher education, with degree courses validated by the University of London in subjects such as engineering, metallurgy, chemistry, and art. During the post-war decades, the institution expanded its facilities and ambitions, though early efforts to gain university status in the 1960s were unsuccessful due to national higher education policies. In 1969, it became Teesside Polytechnic, offering a growing range of degree programmes and expanding through mergers and new campus developments during the 1970s. The transformation into a university occurred in 1992 under the Further and Higher Education Act, marking a major milestone in its development. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the university invested heavily in modern infrastructure, including learning resource centres, specialist research facilities, and landmark buildings such as the Phoenix and Athena Buildings, while preserving several historic Grade II listed structures. In 2009, it adopted the name Teesside University and introduced a new institutional identity focused on inspiring success. Continued investment followed, with major campus redevelopment projects, specialist facilities for dental training and sports therapy, and long-term masterplans aimed at transforming the Middlesbrough campus. In recent years, the university has strengthened its role in innovation and sustainability through initiatives such as the Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre. Despite challenges, including damage during unrest in 2024, Teesside University has gained national recognition for its modern approach to education, earning major awards in 2025 for teaching excellence, employer engagement, and overall university performance.
