St Mary’s University is a public university located in Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in London, England. Founded in 1850, it is recognized as the oldest Catholic university in the United Kingdom and was granted full university status in 2014. The university has a campus-based structure with around 5,000 students and offers academic programs mainly in teacher education, sport science, health, humanities, and related fields. It was originally established as a Catholic teacher training college initiated by Cardinal Wiseman to educate schoolmasters and later evolved through various academic affiliations, including the University of London Institute of Education and validation by the University of Surrey before gaining independent degree-awarding powers. The campus is historically significant as it is located on land that was once part of Strawberry Hill House, an 18th-century Gothic Revival residence built by Horace Walpole, which influenced early neo-Gothic architecture in Britain. Parts of this heritage, including the Chapel in the Wood, remain preserved and restored as part of the university grounds. Over the years, St Mary’s expanded its infrastructure, academic portfolio, and international partnerships with institutions such as the University of Notre Dame, Australian Catholic University, and others, strengthening its global academic presence. The university is also known for its strong sporting reputation, particularly through its Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre, producing elite athletes who have competed in multiple Olympic and Paralympic Games including London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024, winning several medals. It also has involvement in major sporting events such as the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 through its alumni and students.
