ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Southampton Solent University, a public university based in Southampton, United Kingdom, serves approximately 10,500 students and is located on East Park Terrace near the city centre and the city’s maritime hub. The university’s origins date back to 1856, when a private School of Art was founded, which later became the Southampton College of Art. Over time, the College of Art merged with the Southampton College of Technology and the College of Nautical Studies at Warsash, leading to the creation of the Southampton Institute of Higher Education in 1984. This institute played a key role in providing business-focused degrees in partnership with Nottingham Trent University, including accountancy, finance, and professional ACCA qualifications, with joint certification reflecting the collaboration. On 12 July 2005, Southampton Institute achieved university status and adopted the name Southampton Solent University on 15 August of the same year. Since then, the university has continued to expand its academic partnerships, such as a 2015 agreement with the New College of the Humanities in London to validate some of their degrees. In 2017, the Privy Council approved the name change to Solent University, effective from 2018. However, based on research emphasizing the importance of local identity for stakeholder collaboration and recruitment, the university decided to revert to its former name, Southampton Solent University, officially reinstating it on 24 September 2024. Students at the university are represented by the Solent Students’ Union, located on the East Park Terrace campus. Over its long history, Southampton Solent University has evolved from a small art school into a modern institution offering diverse programs while maintaining strong ties to its local community and maritime heritage.
