COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Jewellery and Metalwork program is designed to develop students’ creative, technical, and conceptual abilities within the fields of contemporary jewellery and metalwork. Across the course, students engage deeply with practical making while integrating research, theory, and critical reflection into their practice. The Critical Making module provides a foundation for exploring innovative techniques and materials, encouraging experimentation and the development of a distinctive artistic voice. In the Material Research, Theory and Practice module, students examine the broader cultural, social, and conceptual contexts of their work, considering how their practice can respond to and reflect contemporary issues. The MA Jewellery and Metalwork Project enables students to consolidate their skills and knowledge through a major independent project, guiding them to plan, execute, and present a cohesive body of work that demonstrates both technical proficiency and conceptual depth. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on developing professional skills, including the creation of portfolios, exhibition planning, and engagement with the creative industries. By combining rigorous hands-on practice with critical inquiry, the program equips graduates with the expertise and confidence to pursue careers as professional jewellers, metalwork artists, or designers, while fostering the ability to contribute meaningfully to national and international artistic and cultural contexts.
