COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Honours) Operating Department Practice program is a three-year course designed to prepare students for professional practice in operating theatre and critical care settings, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide safe and effective care to patients undergoing surgical and anaesthetic procedures. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules such as Collaboration for Individual and Community Wellbeing, ODP Introduction to ODP and University Life, ODP Principle Roles of ODP, Personal and Professional Development, and the first clinical practice placement. This year focuses on understanding perioperative care principles, developing essential practical skills, and fostering professional growth. In the second year, students advance their knowledge and practice through modules including Assessing and Addressing Complexity in Practice, Evidence and Enquiry for Practice, ODP Developing Intraoperative Practice, ODP Management and Care of Acute and Critical Patients, and the second clinical placement. Students gain experience managing complex situations, enhancing clinical reasoning, and applying evidence-based approaches. The third year emphasizes leadership, professional development, and advanced perioperative practice, with modules such as Complexity and Leadership in Professional Practice, ODP Developing the Practice Educator, ODP Enhanced Perioperative Practice, The Advancing Professional, and the final clinical placement. Graduates are prepared for professional registration and are equipped to work confidently in perioperative and critical care teams, contributing to patient safety, high-quality care, and efficient healthcare delivery.
