COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Honours) Sociology degree provides students with a thorough understanding of social structures, behaviours, and contemporary issues, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare for diverse careers or further study. In the first year, students gain foundational sociological skills through modules such as Deviance, Order and Protest, Researching Society, Sociology – The Big Issues, and The Sociological Imagination, developing critical thinking, analytical skills, and a broad understanding of societal dynamics. The second year expands on these foundations with Applied Research Methods, Inequality, Identity and Intersectionality, and Theorising Modernities, while optional modules such as Sociology – Real-World Application, Study Abroad – Social Sciences, and Work Placement offer practical experience, international exposure, and opportunities to apply sociological theory to real-world contexts. In the final year, advanced modules including Drugs, Crime and Society, Education, Health and Disability, Gender, Sexuality and Culture, and the Sociology Dissertation enable students to engage in in-depth research, critical analysis, and independent study, producing a substantial research project. Throughout the program, students cultivate research, communication, and problem-solving skills, emerging as analytically capable and socially aware graduates ready for careers in social research, policy, community development, public services, or postgraduate study.
