The BA (Honours) Social Work degree combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience to develop competent, reflective, and ethical social work practitioners. In the first year, students gain foundational understanding of professional practice through modules such as Collaboration for Individual and Community Wellbeing, Personal and Professional Development, The Theoretically Informed Practitioner, and Values into Action, focusing on applying theory to practice, ethical decision-making, and understanding the values underpinning social work. Year two builds on this foundation with modules including Assessing and Addressing Complexity in Practice, Developing Professional Practice, Evidence and Enquiry for Practice, Social Work Practice Experience 1, and Working with People Across the Life Course, enabling students to engage with real-world social work challenges, assess complex situations, and develop professional skills across diverse client groups. The final year emphasizes advanced practice, leadership, and career readiness through Achieving Critical Practice, Complexity and Leadership in Professional Practice, Social Work Practice Experience 2, The Advancing Professional, and The Career Ready Social Worker, supporting students in consolidating knowledge, undertaking complex interventions, and preparing for professional registration. Across all years, practice placements and practical modules ensure that students integrate theory with hands-on experience, cultivating skills in communication, empathy, problem-solving, and multi-agency collaboration. Graduates leave the program equipped to enter professional social work roles in a variety of settings or pursue postgraduate study in social work and related disciplines.
