COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Honours) Criminology program is a four-year course designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of crime, criminal behaviour, victimisation, and social harm, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation through core modules such as Contemporary Criminological Foundations and Contemporary Criminological Practice, developing essential skills in critical thinking, research, and analysis. The second year expands on this foundation with Understanding and Researching Crime and Social Harm, alongside elective modules including Professional Practice on Placement, Real World Practice, and Study Abroad opportunities at the Institute of Law and Justice, allowing students to gain applied experience and international perspectives on crime and justice. In the final year, students can specialise through a range of elective modules such as 21st Century Security Threats: Crime, Crisis or Tragedy, Comparative Criminal Justice, Controversies of Policing, Crime, Harm and Social Justice, Gender, Power and the State, Pathways to Change, Punishment and Practice in Context, Real World Project, Real World Research, and Sex, Gender and Violence, providing opportunities for independent research, critical analysis, and practical application. This combination of theory, applied practice, and specialised electives equips graduates with the knowledge, analytical skills, and professional experience necessary to pursue careers in law enforcement, policy, social research, advocacy, and further postgraduate study in criminology and related disciplines.
