COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Honours) Criminology and Sociology program is a four-year degree that integrates criminological and sociological perspectives to provide students with a thorough understanding of crime, deviance, marginalisation, and social inequality. In the first year, students focus on foundational knowledge through modules such as Contesting Crime and Deviance and Researching Crime, Deviance and Marginalisation, developing critical thinking and research skills. The second year builds on this with Investigating Crime, Deviance and Marginalisation, alongside elective options such as Professional Practice on Placement, Real World Practice, and Study Abroad opportunities at the Institute of Law and Justice, offering practical experience and global insight. In the final year, students can specialise and deepen their expertise through a wide range of elective modules including 21st Century Security Threats: Crime, Crisis or Tragedy, Comparative Criminal Justice, Controversies of Policing, Crime, Harm and Social Justice, Drugs, Crime and Society, Education, Health and Disability, Families, Age and Relationships, Gender, Power and the State, Gender, Sexuality and Culture, Pathways to Change, Punishment and Practice in Context, Real World Project, Real World Research, and Sex, Gender and Violence. This structure equips graduates with advanced analytical, research, and practical skills, preparing them for careers in law enforcement, social policy, research, advocacy, and community engagement, as well as postgraduate study in criminology, sociology, and related disciplines.
